The Nobel Prizes are awarded every year in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace. Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel expressed in his will that the funds from his estate be used towards presenting the prizes. The first set was given out in 1901. Each recipient receives a gold medal, a diploma and some amount of money—in all, the equivalent of USD 1.2 million. Many a times, more than one person is awarded the prize in the same year, and the prize money is divided among them equally.
