Non-Fiction Animal Articles and Comprehension Checks
There are seven non-fiction, or informational text, articles about the different animal classifications.
Here are the titles of the animal articles:
Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates
Each article has the same structure and includes many text features. Text features include: title, subheadings, (at least) three important content words in special types of print, “Did You Know?” box with fascinating facts, and pictures (clip art) of the animals featured. Words in special types of print include bold, italics, or a pronunciation key.
There are two different printables that check your students comprehension for each article. There are 14 reading checkpoint printables total.
The reading comprehension checkpoints include:
Identifying main idea and supporting details
Finding text evidence to answer questions about the article
Identifying text features
Identifying key details
Identifying important vocabulary/content words
Writing an opinion with supporting reasons about the article
Each article is in black and white, which makes it perfect for photocopying for your students. I also included an article with color graphics if you wish to use that with your students.
