This unit teaches students to closely read non fiction and culminates with 2 short essays and a debate. It includes full lessons with student materials that include: practice with root words, use of quotation marks and commas, as well as a guide to setting up the debate.
In working on non fiction, these lessons focus on the relationship between the main idea and supporting details. It also requires students to differentiate between fact and opinion. Finally, this unit requires students to thoughtfully decide which pieces of textual evidence will support their argument.
