If you are looking for a reading unit that focuses on non-fiction text and how to better understand it? Then this is the pack for you!
This unit is taught over a 4-5 week period. Students will focus on nonfiction text and how to share what they read with others during book clubs. Students are reading biographies and then sharing what they learn with their book clubs. They may use the nonfiction biography journal to help guide them during group discussion.
I have three groups in my room. One group chose to read about Anne Frank, the second group chose to read about Thomas Edison, and the third group chose Jane Goodall. As a class, I modeled how to read the books by reading a biography about Ronald Reagan.
The first two weeks or sub goals focus on the first biography students read. The last two weeks or sub goals focus on the second biography students read. Students read about the same person throughout the whole unit, but read two different biography books so they can compare and contrast the information they learn from each book.
This unit could also be used with ANY non-fiction topic. I just chose to teach biographies, but the material works with any non-fiction text.
