Ready to help stretch your students as non-fiction readers? Want them to try an entire book, instead of just articles or short pieces? Do your readers need challenge?

Use this whole-class book study with a non-fiction text of your choice!

This highly-flexible, completely editable unit is ready to customize to the needs of your class, the book of your choosing, and the topic you want to address. The unit goes like this:

1. Setup: Students complete the pre-assessment and a sign-up sheet (to express interest in particular chapters/topics and group members).
2. Introduce: Give an overview of the unit, distribute materials, assign groups, and read the introduction (or chapter one) of your book together.
3. Peer Presentations: Small groups take turns presenting their chapter to the rest of the class (similar to a Jigsaw activity)
4. Conclude: Students take both the post-assessment survey and a unit test to show what they have learned from the book.

This book study is a collaborative way to accomplish CCSS for Non-Fiction and Speaking, but it is also a way to safely delve into harder (or just longer) non-fiction! These materials could also be adapted into a lit circle. The unit is as easy or difficult as the text with which you use it! :-)

The length of this book study varies by your homework policies and how much in-class work time you give students – we did it in a little under 3 weeks (with plenty of work time).

This download includes:*
• Editable Word docs and PDF versions
• A Teacher’s Guide with tips
• Generic version of the entire unit (to apply to any text)
• (Want to see an example? A text-specific example version, based on the book Talk Like TED (Gallo), which is the text that I originally used for this unit!)

*Between both versions of the unit and all the PDF copies, this download is 18 slides and over 20 pages long.
