This is a great project for grades 1-4. Have students pick a topic of their choice, or you could use a content area for the whole class to work on at the same time. This would be a good choice if your class needs a lot of scaffolding and support, and cannot work as well independently.
The project packet includes a step-by-step checklist for students to use as a guide as they work through the project. It is set-up to reinforce the use of non-fiction text features, too.
The project is set-up for a five chapter book. Each student packet will need a cover page, the planning checklist, the chapter planner, and then five copies of the chapter plan sheet and the chapter draft sheet (I'd copy these back-to-back).
You will need to provide "planning paper" and "publishing paper" based on the writing paper you use in your classroom. I usually have the students glue each final copy page to construction paper and I bind the book together for them.
