Elephants Never Forget SO…
Let’s Not Forget the Elephants!
Celebrate National Elephant Day
September 22nd with Common Core
This packet has ideas that align with Common Core Standards for Reading and Writing. The children will learn facts about elephants during a shared reading experience. I have also used this activity by having groups of children read different leveled fiction stories about elephants and completed the activity with partners or small groups. Whichever way you choose to use this packet, your children will be sure to have fun while learning.
What’s Included in this packet?
2 suggested reading to use for a Shared Reading.
1 Elephant Can, Have, Are Sheet to use when pausing while reading the stories so students can take notes or to use after reading the story.
A fact and Opinion sheet with facts and opinions on elephant heads to sort and use at a center or station with blanks to add your own facts and opinions.
A Making Connections Sheet for Text to Self, Text to World or Text to Text Connections.
A Determining Important Idea Sheet to use with Non-fiction stories, in this case, about elephants.
A B,M,E Reading Frame to use with the story Tara and Bella since it is a non-fiction story but has a story line which would work with this frame.
An Elephant paper plate craft.
A Sheet to write a simple report about elephants using the information learned or gained from the stories suggested.
Here are Two books which I have used with the activities in this packet:
Amazing Animals: Elephants by Jacqueline Dineen (Author)
Tarra & Bella: The Elephant and Dog Who Became Best Friends
By: Carol Buckley (Author)
Here is a website that has many fictional stories about elephants if you would like to use these for compare contrast fiction/non-fiction or to use for shared reading. The included reading response sheets can be used with these stories to support reading strategies. http://childrensbooksguide.com/elephants.
