Challenge your students with real-world mentor texts
With the push to incorporate more non-fiction texts and to improve the way students respond to writing prompts it is imperative that we find real world examples of non-fiction texts to engage them. By reading about topics that interest them and then analyzing the techniques used by the authors we can effectively bolster our students’ reading comprehension and writing skills simultaneously.
Use the included sheets to help your students examine mentor texts in order to hone their analytical skills as well as identify writing traits they can use in their own writing. Help your students break out of the five paragraph essay mode. Prepare them for college. Prepare them for the dreaded standardized tests.
