15 Non-Fiction Passages with Criteria Tables and Anchor Charts
Each of these 15 passages is accompanied by a test-like question, a criteria table (to help students analyze the proficiency of each answer choice) and a blank target. The target is a visual that students fill in to demonstrate the sufficiency of an answer choice (see last slide of preview). These tools help your students practice choosing an answer choice strategically, and gives them several ways to justify their answer.
Five passages about archery (to keep with the target practice theme!). Students read the passage and the question over main idea. There is a criteria table for each answer choice as well as a blank target. Students fill in the criteria tables and the targets to identify an answer choice as “way off,” “miss,” or “bullseye” (see the preview for an example). Key included.
Five passages about the game of horseshoes. The questions ask students to identify the text structure of the passage as a whole. Text structures included: problem & solution, compare & contrast, description, procedural text, chronological order. Key included
Five passages about basketball. Each question asks students to analyze a word from the passage. Students follow several steps to analyze the word, then record some information on a chart before choosing their answer. Key Included
An anchor chart is included for each of the three concepts. The anchor charts pertain directly to answering questions over these concepts. See preview for an example.
