I created these for my 15-20 minute small teacher lead reading groups. The kids LOVE working with the highlighters in my classroom. So, when they see the reading passages pulled out they are always excited. I have them read as a group (taking turns), then we read through the questions, read the text again, then search for the answers in the text, highlight our answers, and then write our answers to the questions. Students MUST first find the answers to the questions and highlight exactly what they are going to write first. Many tests my students were asked to complete were all about underlining or highlighting their answers from a short story and then writing their answers down. This task wasn't something we worked on enough and many lost the point and would highlight an area, then write a completely different answer on the written portion of the test. This has helped my students read, understand what they are reading, and answer TEXT BASED EVIDENCE questions. I have even used these for students that were out of town or absent for long periods of time.

******* Please understand, some text are more complicated than others. My lower reading groups at times need more guidance and help with some of the vocabulary (especially in the beginning of the year when they are still new to the activity). My higher leveled reading groups enjoy them, are still challenged and are often able to do more follow up writing on what they have learned from the passages. ***************************
