These codes are used when students are reading any non-fiction text. For my 4th graders, the students read, draw the symbol, and explain their thinking for the code. I have students provide schema and explanations to justify why they chose the code. This has increased reading comprehension in my classroom along with student participation. I have incorporated several ways for students to share them, whether it volunteer share or a game-like style, called musical shares.
I print a copy for each of my students to keep in their reading notebooks. Be sure to check my site for the Fiction Text Codes!
For example: ! I was surprised that Louis Armstrong invented scat. I didn't know scat was a sound made with the mouth. This was interesting and important to jazz. (This was an actual text code provided by a student in my classroom)
This could be adapted to lower grade levels by highlighting codes in various colors or marking them with Post-It Flags.
**Happy Text Coding** :)
