This product includes a 15 lesson unit outline, and a graphic organizer for teaching students how to read to answer a question. This is an essential unit in any curriculum! Teachers often take for
granted that students will know how to answer a question. The truth is that we read differently when the purpose is to answer a question. This is not just a skill used in the classroom. Even as an adult, how often do you head to the internet to answer a question that you have? As the instructor of this unit, keep stressing that this is a life skill and not just something they are learning to do well in school. None of these skills are taught just for test taking.
This unit is designed for grades 3-8. It is easily adaptable to many ages groups depending on the question and resources provided by the instructor. Lessons include the following topics: understanding the question, planning where to look for information, taking notes and determining if your notes will answer the question, identifying the main idea of text excerpts, tracking main ideas to determine the best answer, organizing main ideas to answer the question in an organized way, looking for supporting details for the main ideas, filling gaps in research and asking further questions.
Each lesson is designed so the teacher models a new skill each day and then the students have the opportunity for independent practice around their own research topic. The instructor is responsible for providing text resources.
