Warriner’s Non-Fiction Story “Film Pitch” Presentation Contest

This is a “real world” kinesthetic activity that students both learn from and enjoy. I received requests to make this unit available from former students who are now teachers!

Instructor rubric and student rubrics allow each presenter to be evaluated by the class as well as the instructor. The lesson plans, rubrics, exams, and activities in this unit are completely classroom tested. I created and developed this unit in order to teach English/Language Arts to middle school students.

Students’ writing skills improve as students acquire and develop knowledge of the use of figurative language in their writing and can apply their writing to “real world” situations.

Warriner’s Non-Fiction Story “Film Pitch” Presentation Contest asks students to:

Write a “Film Pitch” Presentation for a film idea on the non-fiction book they read.

Create a poster (visual aid) that illustrates the “Film Pitch.”
Present both to the class.

For the Presentation, students:
Create a business card
Wear business attire
Enter a room and shake hands with the interviewer
Acknowledge the group in the meeting
Give a “Film Pitch” proposal Presentation, while being filmed

This assignment is also a CONTEST!

The winner receives $1,000,000 dollars to make their film.
Second place gets a $100,000 investment in their movie project.
Third place gets a Payday of unreleased value.

Each class votes anonymously in order to choose the top three presenters from each class.

Awards Ceremony: At the end of the presentations, I like to have a Team or School Assembly, so that each class gets to see and hear about the presenters from all my classes. I present each winner with a certificate, a medal (both of which I order, using my Language Arts budget), and their “financial” prizes:

First Place: A fake, realistic-looking $1,000,000 dollar bill and a gigantic Hershey candy bar, an inscribed medal, and a certificate
Second Place: $100,000 candy bar, an inscribed medal, and a certificate
Third Place: Payday candy bar, an inscribed medal, and a certificate

Note: You can choose different prizes, as you know your students best!

You can purchase inexpensive fake million dollar bills online, or you can use the picture of one in the unit.
