This product was designed to complement a non-fiction unit I created for my guided reading groups. It is an opportunity for students to show that they understand the purpose of non-fiction text features and how authors use them. The best part is, they get to do it by showing off their own knowledge!
This works well for many reasons. It is inherently motivating because the students get to be the expert on a topic of their choice. Due to the motivation and the students' intimate background knowledge of the topic, the creation removes the idea generation portion of the writing process from the equation and allows students to focus on quality depiction of their information using text features.
The design of the book also aids its function. Since the text features are explained and separated from one another, students tend to feel less overwhelmed than when they encounter a blank page. It is broken down into small, manageable parts.
The book includes prompts for writing, and a description of the purpose of the following text features: Title, Table of Contents, headings, photographs, captions, bold words, glossary, timelines, maps, tables, charts and index.
The students love it so much they don't even realize they are working. The design is so user-friendly that teachers won't even realize which students are the struggling ones. This expert book turns the difficult, frustrating process of teaching and learning about text-features as required by the common core standards into a win-win situation!
