This bundle includes some resources I used in my non-fiction text features unit:
I introduced the unit by reading a non-fiction and fiction story about penguins. We discussed the similarities and differences between the two stories and pointed out the different features that non-ficiton books include.
Next, we focused on a new text feature each day and created a huge text features chart as an interactive writing. The chart included the text feature, where it is located, what it is used for, and an example from a non fiction book that we read as a class (we read a non-fiction story each day- I photocopied the different features to paste in the chart).
Here is when I began with the resources included:
To check for understanding, students completed the non-fiction vs picture sort. They did pretty well!
After this, I provided students with non-fiction books (I had easier and harder books for specific students). Students read the books and completed the text feature hunt paper (this is differentiated...harder and easier version included).
The last thing students got to do was create their own book! They got to do research on an animal (but you could choose anything for students to write about...the booklet is open-ended) and write their own non-fiction book. They LOVED this! the booklet includes a template for students to make a cover, contents page, 3 pages of info, pictures with captions, and a glossary)
