Non-Fiction Text Features Vocabulary Game: Non-Fiction Text Features Oh Boogers! Game is a great way for students to review non-fiction terms such as caption, chart, main idea and heading. It can easily be used for small groups of struggling students or as enrichment for early finishers. This literacy center activity works for grades 3, 4, 5 or 6. It may also be done as a whole class activity 1st-6th. Perfect for the ELL or EC classroom.
2 sets of 24 cards and answer key
Put all of the cards in a pile and take turns picking them up. When you pick up a card you have to give the right answer. If you get the right answer, you get to keep your card. (Check the answer card if you are not sure.) If you get it wrong, you have to put your card back. If you pull an “Oh Boogers!” card, you have to put all of your cards back in the pile.
Adaptions: Place the cards in a gift bag to draw from instead of a pile. I use old birthday and Christmas bags and the kids enjoy passing the bag around to draw from.
One buyer suggested, “ my strugglers had a hard time linking the answer key and the cards…We ended up using it as a concentration matching game with the booger cards as a penalty.” Love this idea!
Note to teachers:
There are two sets of cards for this activity. If you want to use the vocabulary cards in the game, then the definition cards become the answer key to use. If you want to use the definition cards in the game, then the vocabulary cards become the answer key. I use this in a literacy center and place the answer key in a plastic sleeve for students to refer to if needed.
I recommend laminating cards on card stock
