A printable PDF handout for secondary students to fill in while reading a non-fiction text, such as a textbook
. This handout could be completed independently, in small groups, or left as a sub assignment. It could also be used with newspaper or magazine articles.
I use this handout as guided notes for my advanced students in grades 9-12
when they are working independently with non-fiction texts in class. It is important to me that they get some practice reading textbooks on their own
(and actually teaching themselves the information from the textbook without my help) before heading off to college.
This handout also helps them to process what they are reading
and gives them the opportunity to ask questions about things they are not understanding.
Formatted to be printed as double-sided copies. I make enough copies so that students can use one side of the page for each major section of a chapter
, but you could have them use one side of the page per chapter, article, etc.
☆Summarizing the Text
(This is an important skill that is often overlooked--this handout requires them to write a clear, concise
☆Important People or Terms
☆What they Learned
☆What they Don't Understand
(My favorite part! I can easily see what they didn't understand and answer their questions during grading!)
