Create and Write a Non-fiction Animal Book. This is a project where students create and write their own nonfiction book about an animal.
After learning about animal classification
and non-fiction features, this project is a great and fun way for the students to demonstrate what they have learned. I have used it in my class for the past few years and the students love working on it and displaying the finished book.
It includes a project outline and directions accompanied by example photographs of student work. The outline also has some recommended kid friendly websites for student research. It has an assessment rubric and graphic organizers for taking notes and writing early drafts. It has a variety of labels to put on project folders.
The project is designed for the students to create their own book without the use of page templates. I have found this gives the students more of a sense of ownership when they design the chapters, table of contents, glossary, etc. themselves. It requires the use of non-fiction features while providing the freedom to create and design them how they desire.
