Tired of too-easy workbook passages? District tests that use the same released passages you used to practice? Basal texts that don't seem to align with STAAR?
I was tired of these things too, and always complained that finding quality reading practice materials that adequately prepared my kids for the test was the hardest thing about teaching reading. Then, I got sick of complaining and decided to write some practice materials myself. Hooray!
These mini STAAR passages can help your students become familiar with both the content and format of the STAAR test.
This passage includes an expository article about Death Valley and 10 associated STAAR questions. TEKS covered include Fig 19 D, 5.2b (vocabulary in context), 5.2e (dictionary skills), 5.11a (main idea), 5.11d (text features), 5.11e (connections within/across text).
To make it a whole lesson, pair it with a library book about the valley or a fiction story based in a desert setting. Other uses include test prep, tutorials, assessments, and reteach/summer school. An answer key is included with TEKS listed. Happy reading!
