Product Description
This activity includes a link to a nonfiction article (about school suspensions and their effectiveness), close reading options, writing prompts, extension activities, and a complete lesson plan.

Responding to nonfiction is a lifelong skill. Students need to understand a writer's purpose, the publisher and research's bias, manipulative language, and more. Almost every college professor asks students to judge and critique nonfiction writing. This will allow students to practice responding in this manner.

This nonfiction activity also relates to students on a personal level. Research in the article covers the effectiveness of suspensions and the problems associated with them. Students become very involved with the discussion and reading.

It is Common Core aligned, and provides an outline of lesson plans for the article and writing assignment. It includes notes for the teacher, instructional sheets for the students, ten questions specific to the article, and an alternative set of questions (for use as you need). You may choose one of two writing prompts - or allow students to choose.

It includes everything I use when teaching the lesson. I use it with my freshmen and sophomores. The reading, discussion, and writing takes me a week of classes.

(The preview for this nonfiction analysis activity includes pages two and four of the lesson plan).
