Nonfiction Analysis for Secondary Students: Dolphin Conversations - They Exist?

Nonfiction Analysis for Secondary Students: Dolphin Conversations - They Exist?
Product Description
This activity includes a link to a nonfiction article (about the scientific community's differing beliefs concerning dolphin communication), close reading options, writing prompts, extension activities, and a complete lesson plan.

Responding to nonfiction is a lifelong skill. Students need to understand a writer's purpose, the publisher and research's bias, manipulative language, and more. Almost every college professor asks students to judge and critique nonfiction writing. This will allow students to practice responding in this manner.

This nonfiction article is high interest for students interested in science. As a warning: the article speaks of evolution as a scientific theory. This article may not work in all schools.

It is Common Core aligned, and provides an outline of lesson plans for the article and writing assignment. It includes notes for the teacher, instructional sheets for the students, a prewriting sheet, ten questions specific to the article, and an alternative set of questions (for use as you need). You may choose one of two writing prompts - or allow students to choose.

It includes everything I use when teaching the lesson. I use it with my freshmen and sophomores, but is appropriate for juniors and seniors. The reading, discussion, and writing takes me a week of classes.

(The preview for this nonfiction analysis activity includes pages three and four of the lesson plan).
