Nonfiction Article - A Shakespearean Mystery - Shakespeare Unit Activity

This discussion activity is inspired by a nonfiction article called “Dr. Julie Brown and the Mystery of the Indian Boy.” This biographical feature describes how an American community college professor made a big discovery about Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Use this text to ignite student discussion about the continued impact of Shakespeare and the importance of inquiry. You can use this article with any Shakespeare play. (optimized for grades 9-10)

**I am SUPER EXCITED to share this with y'all. Dr. Julie Brown is my neighbor, and I first heard this story at a lecture she gave. She asked herself why Titania's changeling boy was always depicted as being from India. Her professor said it didn't matter, but Dr. Brown kept asking and kept digging. The truth she uncovered changes how we perceive A Midsummer Night's Dream and the rest of Shakespeare's plays forever.**
