This is a reading packet that can be used with any nonfiction chapter book. The packet contains 10 different reading missions that I created to help my students’ comprehension of the text. I based the activities on the Fountas and Pinnell assessment kit guided reading questions because I found that my students needed additional practice with summarizing, thinking about the text (what the author did to make the text interesting and how the author decided to write the text) , and thinking beyond the text (the big idea of the text) so I decided this would be a fun and easy way to incorporate the questions into independent reading or book groups. Since I have large groups of students, we can’t all read the same book, so I found it is awesome to break students into smaller groups and give them a book based on a theme (such as a mystery book or a book regarding extreme weather) and then use this packet or my with the book.
You can either print the packets and have the students break the book into ten different reading sections and have the students write the pages or chapters to be read for each mission on the pages, or you can divide the book or text as the teacher and then copy the packet. (I like to save them for easy use in the future!) Tell the students which reading mission they are completing for the day and you can either have students read independently, in partners, or in small groups and complete their missions. I like to meet with students if possible to discuss the reading mission they completed the day before so I can check in with the groups, but this is optional!
