This unit is a highly engaging nonfiction research project for first and second graders. Students are to find five clues for various question prompts and try to discover their ocean animal. Students then use a QR reader to see if their guess was correct. There is a writing prewriting questions and papers provided for students to record all of their collectings. There is also a book template for students to write their final informational text. This page layouts also include nonfiction text features for students to add to their stories.
There are three leveled clue cards to fit the various level needs of students in your classroom. Some animals clue cards have 3-4 facts, some have 2-3 facts, and others have 1-2 facts about the animal per card. This offers a great way to differentiated instruction without students knowing.
My class loved this activity and many kids did it multiple times and learned all about various ocean animals.
Additional ideas - Have your students dress up as detectives and use magnifying glasses, put caution tape around your classroom or have your students become an oceanographer.
