I use this Picture Walk and Nonfiction Features Study activity when I am beginning a new informational text with my middle school students. The text I use is Promises to Keep by Sharon Robinson, but I have included two versions (one specific to this text, one generalized for any informational text with features). The first day, students simply explore the text, looking at pictures, unique fonts, etc. The second day I offer more direction instruction as students complete detailed guided notes and students are then allowed to go back through the text to locate the nonfiction text features they have learned about. This Picture Walk & Nonfiction Features Mini-Study usually takes me 2-3 days to complete. An answer key is included. Enjoy!
