Shrink a Text is used for determining the main idea of a nonfiction passage. You can put this printable into a plastic sheet protector or laminate it for multiple uses. It can also be copied and written on directly. I often use sticky notes or dry erase markers on this product.
The top rectangle is for the passage title or heading. After reading it, the child should try to shrink down what they’ve read into one sentence. That goes in the bottom rectangle. This helps children condense what they are reading into the main idea. To extend, you can have them support their statements with text details or share their findings with their reading partners.
