Step 1 Remembering : main idea-- The student has to answer 3 questions, from these three questions they will be able to tell you the main idea of the story by creating a phrase about the story based on the answers.
Step 2 Understanding details--will help your students learn how to describe 3 main details about the story.
Step 3 Applying--begins the higher level questioning, but the answers are still in the reading material.
Step 4 Analyzing--has the student identify a sequence or list of components that make up the story.
Step 5 Evaluating--uses a lot of inferring or predicting to answer the questions.
Step 6 Creating--has the student think about the topic in a new way or create a plan.

It has come to my attention through working with various ages of children that they do not have the language ability to answer this type of questioning accurately and effectively. My students struggle with questions at the application level and above. If the answers are taken directly from the text they may be able to find the correct answer. However, if the questions require deeper insight especially answering Why and How questions, my students struggle! I created this unit with them in mind. **Download the Treasure Chest free sample in the preview before you buy!**
The stories are original and I hope of high interest to your students. They even print great in black and white! For my older students (from third through eighth grade self contained classes) I plan on teaching them the first few stories and then letting them have more independence with answering the questions. I want to check their sentence structure as well during this activity. Hopefully, by the end of this unit I will be able to see a huge difference in their ability to answer higher order thinking questions!
I hope this unit helps your students improve their higher order thinking skills! I plan on making a set of fiction passages as well so please follow my store at the star to see when they are finished!
