This nonfiction reading passage is about burial customs from around the world. It is a perfect cross-curricular reading for reluctant readers. This resource contains a suggested lesson plan, CCSS-aligned multiple-choice questions, and open-ended questions for critical thinking. It was originally designed to accompany Burnbridge Breakouts: Secrets from the Graveyard (grades 7-10).

About the Questions:

This passage (and the Burnbridge Breakouts series) has been written with reluctant readers in mind. One question meets the student where they are (RI.5.3), five are at the target grade level (RI.8.1, RI.8.2, RI.8.3, RI.8.5 and RI.8.6), and three are “reach” questions (RI.9.1, RI.9.3 and RI.9.4). Each question has the standard and relevant rationale listed in the answer key. The critical thinking questions target RI.8.8 and RI.8.9.
