Allow students to choose how they are assessed in their understanding of nonfiction. I have used the ideas of a mastery task, a self-expressive task, an interpersonal task, or an understanding task to create the menu's framework. I have students choose a task and get a teacher's signature (I find that this cuts down on students being paralyzed by choice), write a rough draft, get student input, and then complete a final draft. I have also included a rubric that assesses the completed work with all of these steps evaluated. I recommend providing students with a clear timeline to complete this task since I have gotten high-quality products as a result. This project does not require technology but could easily be adapted to do so.
