This is a fun and engaging activity for the students to work on during reading class for many reasons. All kids like a challenge, especially when they are placed in teams in the classroom. I use this team challenge to get my students to read more nonfiction books, respond to the books in a way that is thought provoking and also engaging. I use this activity when they are finished reading their assigned book or independent book and are ready to read a "dessert book". This can also be used when teaching nonfiction to the class. This also gives the students a "voice" and a choice as to which books they are reading. The tic tac toe board helps them to dive deeper into their own thinking- many items are based on Notice and Note. This activity also encourages team work. It is motivating to students, especially if you have a prize waiting for them at the end.
This packet includes the following:
• 4 different tic tac toe boards. One specifically is made for sports and one is for biographies and autobiographies.
• Student recording sheets
• Ideas for the topics (this would depend upon what is available in your school library and in your own personal library.
Have fun with this activity.
