This nonfiction reading passages resource includes two separate informational text passages (one on rabbits, one on hares) with task cards and comprehension/inference questions for each passage, with an additional set of questions that requires information from both reading passages. The resource is intended for use with students from 11-14 years of age.
These passages are intended for science classes but are great for English classes or for reading intervention with middle school students. The focus of the reading passages is on the physical and behavioral adaptations of rabbits and hares. The questions and task cards require students to use the text information to make inferences about the adaptations and how they make the hare or rabbit well adapted for the environment.
The passages would be useful for a “jigsaw “reading activity or for paired reading. Use either reading passage with it’s associated task cards or question sets, or use both reading passages with all the task cards and the set of questions that addresses both reading passages together (requiring information from both passages to answer the questions.)
The hares reading passage is approximately 780 words long (approx. 6.0 grade level.) The rabbits reading passage is approximately 850 words long (approx. 7.0 grade level.)
The science vocabulary in the reading passages, questions and task cards (combined) includes: altricial, precocial,crepuscular, nocturnal, diurnal, herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, Lagomorpha, population, adaptation (adapted), predator, environment

Two one-page reading passages
Two sets of 10 photo-illustrated task cards (20 total)
Student answer sheets for the task card questions
Answer keys for the task card questions
Three worksheets (one for each reading passage + one for the combined passages.)
Three answer keys (one for each of the worksheets.)

** PLEASE NOTE: This resource includes a complete duplicate set of reading passages, task cards and questions using UK/Canadian/Australian spelling.
The reading passages were formatted to fit on one side of one sheet of U.S. letter-sized paper. (8.5” x 11”) Some students may have difficulty reading the size of print required to fit the text on one page. I have therefore also provided duplicate copies of the reading passages (both U.S. and UK versions) in a larger font with increased spacing between lines. The page count does not include the larger print versions of the reading passages.
