Product Description
Make Inferences in Science – The Elements is a set of nonfiction reading passages written to support your efforts to incorporate ELA reading standards into your science classes during your unit on chemical elements. As a science teacher myself, I experienced the pressure of trying to teach everything in my own subject area in the time I had available. Trying to also incorporate reading and writing standards in the time available is really a challenge for science teachers. These brief passages give students an opportunity to read grade-level science passages and make inferences from them. By using them, you’ll incorporate reading and writing seamlessly into your science instruction.

This set of four reading passages, the second in the Make Inferences In Science series, focuses on the chemical elements Hydrogen, Carbon, Phosphorus, and Radium. Each passage tells a short interesting story related to one element, and is accompanied by questions that require students to make inferences from the text. Answer keys are included. Please see the preview for excerpts from the passages and sample questions.

This resource also includes an annotated list of additional Internet resources with hyperlinks. Each of these passages could be an entry activity into further study of the element, using the annotated linked resources.

This is a very user -friendly resource for a substitute, and is perfect for bell work or as a stand-alone resource for your ‘quick finishers’ in regular education classes. Reading intervention and special education teachers have used passages in this series with great success with students who have learning disabilities, because the passages are on an appropriate grade level, reinforce what students are learning in science, and are short enough that students don’t get frustrated before finishing the reading, yet still require the student to make inferences from text.
