Nonfiction reading skills are essential for today’s 21st century learners. Being able to determine meaning of words in context, explain the main idea of a passage and write summaries are important skills to practice and review throughout the year. These task cards are perfect for any intermediate level elementary classroom.
There are many ways you can use these in your class: in a literacy center, early finish box, whole class activity, one a day for morning/bell work…
Included in this packet are 20 original nonfiction task cards and a student recording sheet. The recording sheet prompts students to think of a synonym for the underlined words on the task card, write a 1 sentence main idea, and then compose a summary for the paragraph. There are 4 task cards per sheet. Simply cut the cards and laminate for continued use. Either store them in a large index card file box, hole punch and assemble on rings, or place them in a 4x6 photo album that you can find in a dollar store.
