In this one-week unit, Dr. Carol Barsby shares lessons plans for nonfiction reading. This unit focuses on one set of decoding strategies, one set of context clue strategies, and one comprehension strategy. Any nonfiction text can be used for this unit and the guided reading texts should be differentiated for flexible level groups.
The lessons consists of plans for shared reading- whole group reading where text alternates between on and below level text and the skills is explicitly taught to all. The next component is the guided reading component where flexible groups of children read text at their instructional level. There is also a component for writing and suggested literacy stations for each unit.
