This is a nonfiction reading about a traditional Swedish Cake. The two page informational text is purposefully presented in three kinds of paragraphs: compare/contrast, cause & effect, and sequence. The reading is followed by a page of text comprehension questions. After that, there are three pages concerning the three kinds of nonfiction paragraph. One describes all three and asks students to decide which paragraph is which. Then there is an activity for each paragraph focusing on Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, and Order/ Sequence. This is a great activity for talking about kinds of nonfiction. It also is a fun cultural topic! There are small illustrations throughout, however it is a good idea to google the cake to see photographs. This product was specifically designed for Common Core Standards for Third Grade CCSS Literacy.RI.3.8 – Describe the logical connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text (e.g., comparison, cause/effect, first/second/third in a sequence). However, it could be used in other close grades. This would be fun to do as a class or at centers.
