Retelling nonfiction isn't often as nice and neat as retelling fiction. Often, learners get bogged down in all the information presented in a nonfiction text. And when you factor in text structure, learners can begin to feel their brains turning into mush!
No more! It's MUSH to the rescue with nonfiction retelling!
M.U.S.H. stands for:
M- Main idea – What is the text mostly about? Do you see details that support this topic?
U- Uncover the Purpose – Why did the author write the text?
S- Structure – What's the text structure? This helps learners format their retellings.
H- Helps – Text features are included to help learners find what's important. Use them!
This isn't a step-by-step retelling chart like our S.C.O.O.P. fiction retelling pack
. This is more of a process. By understanding all the elements of MUSH, learners are better able to retell what they've just read about when it comes to nonfiction texts.
Not sure how to teach the elements of MUSH? I've got you covered with links to several nonfiction blog articles that will help!!
