The common core standards require our students to read more nonfiction. Interdisciplinary units require nonfiction texts as well. This makes sense since we are preparing our students to read to learn new information for college, high school, and the working world.
How do we support and engage our students when they are reading nonfiction texts? The documents included in this bundle will do just that!
First, students will use the SQ3R (Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review) method to help them focus and comprehend nonfiction texts. Students will use the frame included to provide guided practice that will support them before, during, and after reading. The guided sheets (2 pages-ready to copy) can be used for readers of all levels.
The Word document bundle includes 3 pages of explicit teacher instructions and all of the common core standards covered in this lesson. There are up to 12 common core standards depending on the roles your students select. You will also receive a reproducible copy with explanations of the 5 student roles (Advice Columnist, Quotable Quoter, Vocabulary Vigilante, Summarizer, and Questioner). The roles will keep students busy and interested while reading nonfiction.
Combine the guided SQ3R sheets with the student roles to meet the Common Core standards in all subject areas!
