A scavenger hunt through nonfiction text!
This activity allows students to explore text structure and text features of nonfiction text. They will search through book and articles for nonfiction features including diagrams, cross-sections, photographs, and glossaries and nonfiction strucutres including compare and contrast, cause and effect, and facts and opinion.
Try pairing students up and encouraging them to race against the clock to find as many items as they can.
This activity is aligned with the following 4th grade Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.5 Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.
