(Junior) Nonfiction Signage
Because of the difference in student reading levels (as well as in height!!) I separated my library into two nonfiction sections – one section for Grades K-2, and one section for Grades 3-5.
I have four nonfiction book browsers for the K-2 area. Rather then recoding ALL of the junior nonfiction books with new spine labels, I simply applied a light green translucent label over the nonfiction spine label. This color-coding system serves as a visual clue that this a JUNIOR nonfiction book, and belongs in the categorized browser.
Browser categories are marked by BIG, colorful, student-friendly signs (please see thumbnails). For example, if a book is a dinosaur book, it is placed in the A dinosaur bin. A green letter A sticker is also placed in the upper left hand corner of the inside cover of the book, and the Marc record for this dinosaur book is modified by inserting “JNFIC” in front of the call number.
