Close reading nonfiction texts is a reading skill that many students struggle with.
This is the 4th video in a short course. The purpose of this video is to provide a plethora of practice opportunities for students to practice the 'close reading' of nonfiction texts applying the strategies taught and modeled in my previous three videos. What does the text say? (summary) What does the text do? (craft and structure) What does the text mean? (meaning/message/bias/POVs).
There is enough content in this video for between six-eight 40-50mins sessions on reading nonfiction. Texts, videos, songs, articles are used to teach and model the skills. Also, mentor sample paragraphs are provided as answers to many of the activities given.
Use the video mainly as a teaching aid to support your classroom instruction. This video is aimed at a teacher - walking him or her through the different practice exercises for close reading.
ALL SLIDES shown in the video are offered as supplementary material FREE with this video. All links are also included.
This video is the final of four in my powerful short NF reading strategies course on informational text. (Find these in my store -NF Craft and Structure Moves and NF Text Main Idea, Central Ideas, and Supporting Ideas). This video can stand alone as a powerful teaching tool in its own right. However, you will find that the whole course - Effective Non-Fiction Reading Strategies: Video Lessons - is worth the investment.
