The nonfiction text feature booklet allows students to navigate nonfiction text, learning a new text feature one at a time. The post-it notes allow students to explore nonfiction books, searching for certain features and tagging the page the particular feature is found. Students can work with partners and/or independently searching for new text features in nonfiction books. The booklet allows for gradual release: I do, we do, you do. I like to present the text feature, define what the feature looks like, explain what it does, and show examples. Then, student partners work together searching through nonfiction books. Finally, students can try it independently. The pages included allow you to create a booklet that allows for partner practice and/or independent practice. There are also many blank writing pages that include nonfiction features so students can write like a nonfiction author. These pages work very well during Reading and Writing Workshop.
