Nonfiction Text Features
This supplemental pack will add to your nonfiction text features (or conventions) unit. This packet includes:
*nonfiction conventions/ text features book for students to record conventions as they find them in text
*nonfiction text feature scavenger hunt
* definitions for the nonfiction text features books
*nonfiction feature posters with example of the text feature (please note “SIDEBAR” is not included)
*two nonfiction features matching game
*nonfiction features assessment
The features covered in this pack are:
• Table of contents
• Types of print (bold, highlighted, italicized, underlined)
• Charts and tables
In order to create the Nonfiction Conventions Book you will need to make several pages for the book- all the same. I only provided one copy to not waste any pages. You will need as many pages as examples the class will find.
There are three versions of the nonfiction scavenger hunt. The first two have students identify text features and the page the features are found on. The third scavenger hunt is more difficult and has students identify the text features and then write how it helps the child as a reader. These can be used to scaffold learning during the unit.
Please note the definitions are just definitions- they are not posters. When I used the definitions I projected them for students to copy for the nonfiction convention book. There is a separate set of posters with the same definition and example. The example is the same one found on the assessment. Please note there is NO poster for sidebar. I could not find any examples . Posters ARE included with the same definition AND an example if you would like to display these for students.
There are two matching games. The first matches an example of the convention to the name. The second matching game matches the definition to the name.
Please note that the assessment and the examples in the matching game are the same.
