Nonfiction Text Features provides an AUTHENTIC AND ENGAGING WAY TO ASSESS WHAT STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO DO BY PAIRING TEXT FEATURES WITH WRITING
Nonfiction Text Features makes a perfect beginning of the year activity. For 2nd and 3rd graders it is the perfectly vehicle for them to review text features and writing conventions, to again feel what its like to be a writer, and for everyone to get to know one another :)
For 4th and above, (and the teacher), it would make for an authentic assessment and could be started in the first couple days of the school year with LOW eacher prep.
Although I like to think this is about PROCESS, it makes for a very cute, and meaningful PRODUCT for students (and parents). This would serve as a wonderful first entry within a student's writing portfolio.
No more spending hours looking for the perfect mentor text and coming up empty. Been there so many times!!! I developed Nonfiction Text Features for mid-year 2nd graders and the results were phenomenal. The mentor text was the secret sauce for this 2 week writing project. I see this being used successfully in grades, 2-6.
