Description

Nonfiction text features can be fun to teach with this engaging, comprehensive reading unit! This hands-on resource includes various activities, including a non-fiction text feature scavenger hunt, anchor charts, reading passages, reading centers, and more! This reading unit is easy to set up for your 1st or 2nd grade students. Clear student directions are included, which makes it easy to leave for a sub too!

The nonfiction text features scavenger hunt is a perfect activity for teaching each text feature. Ideally, teach one or two text features a day. Students will write down the definition and then will find the text feature in their own nonfiction book and draw it in the booklet. This booklet is easy set-up. Just run through the copier and staple!

Using this reading unit helps students develop a deeper knowledge and comprehension of nonfiction text features. This unit will take 1-2 weeks to teach your nonfiction reading lessons. Reinforcing text features in reader’s workshop, as well as using the activities in guided reading and centers will help solidify their knowledge.

What’s included:

  • 21 anchor charts (one for each nonfiction text feature)
  • 2 versions of pre- and post-assessments
  • Whole group sorting activity
  • Non-fiction text features scavenger hunt booklet
  • Small group discussion cards (great for guided reading!)
  • Write the room activity
  • Graphic organizers and reading response sheets
  • Reading passages
  • Reading Center #1: Color-coded reading passages
  • Reading Center #2: Puzzle Center
  • Reading Center #3: Match It
  • Bookmarks
  • Activities are preloaded into Google Slides

This reading unit provides enough activities for 1-2 weeks of reader’s workshop instruction. This is your time to get your planning time back by having these activities done for you!

The kids really enjoyed finding all the text features we learned about in their books. What an amazing resource!” -Corissa
