Use these 23 Nonfiction Text Feature Task Cards as a supplemental activity to increase your students' understanding and to help them to use nonfiction (informational text) resources more effectively. Each of these 23 cards includes a nonfiction text feature term, a short definition, and a writing task. The cards are correlated with RI 3.5, 3.7, and 4.7 Common Core Standards and could easily be incorporated into close reading.
Your students will need age-appropriate nonfiction books to complete these cards. Ideally, one book should be used for most of the cards, however, it is unlikely that one book will include all of the text features, so additional books will be needed (or you can have students skip cards that are not applicable to their books). One option is to create a center with several books available for use. It is also best if the student has not read the book(s) before completing the cards.
Each card is numbered so students can easily track which cards they have completed. A student recording sheet is included. You will also find two different sized response sheets in case you'd like your students to use those. These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Another option is to print on card stock. It works well to keep them in a baggie. A cover card you may use label the baggie is also included.

What teachers have said about this resource:
♥ I am always looking for ways to give quick assessments and provide movement. I hang these around the room and allow the students to walk around answering the cards. LOVE it!
♥ Really helps make nonfiction more fun and friendly to the students. They seem more at ease with reading understanding after these.
♥A great resource for one-on-ones and small group instruction. Also great to encourage students to create their own goals with each skill!
