These are tthree weeks of reading logs for homework. Each week has Monday-Thursday night with directions and a prompt and a place to record the title and pages read. They will turn this in each morning for you to check off and turn in on Fridays. This is a great way to keep your students accountable and a way for them to practice the skills they are learning in class at home. These logs are aligned with common core informational objectives RI5.1 and RI5.2. They will be summarizing two or more main ideas, paraphrasing, identifying new information they learned, connecting their SCHEMA to new information, and giving their reaction. They will also look for new vocabulary words and write the meanings in their own words! LOTS of skills. The third week they will be comparing/contrasting text structures and main ideas for RI5.5. Another idea is to use it during read to self time in your classroom as well and use it as a conferencing and check in tool. You could also use it in small strategy groups with a nonfiction text or magazine article like TIME for kids or Scholastic. SEE MY FLIPCHART for teaching these skills in my store.
