Do you want your students to learn how to take notes INDEPENDENTLY? With this guide/template, this is exactly what will happen AND since it is based on text structure, it will strengthen their analysis and knowledge in this area as well. In addition, it turns into a study guide for test taking or perhaps students will be rewarded with an open note quiz or test!

First, students will be assigned a textbook chapter/section/sub-title of your/their choice or a non-fiction fact/subject book or your/their choice. Then, they will count and record the number of paragraphs. As they read each paragraph, they will analyze its structure, or organizational pattern and record their notes based on that. They will choose from a menu of patterns which include:
fact[names/dates/places/statistics]; main idea/detail; compare/contrast; cause/effect; problem/solution; sequence, list, title/quote, and there is a place for "other." Once they mark their choice, their note must match. For example, if they choose the cause/effect pattern, their note should say: Because of______________, the effect was___________________ or they could split the note-taking box into cause/effect and list bullet points. The choice is yours/theirs.

Four versions are included for choice options [use one page at a time, make single or double-sided copies, or create a packet]:
-main, introductory page which includes example
-continuance page
-main page without example but includes vocab. box [vocab. can be continued onto binder paper]
-main page without example and vocab. but includes a space for a small main idea/detail summary of section/chapter
Make as may copies of each page or any combination of any of the 4.
First, model and think aloud, then students will be on their way to being successful note-takers on their own!!

-use with ANY textbook or fact/subject based book at any reading level
