UPDATED 12/18/2013 Use this nonfiction and fiction text features sheet to describe and show students the text features:
NONFICTION: chapter heading, table of contents, glossary, charts and graphs, diagram, caption, index, types of print, cutaways, and maps.
FICTION: chapter index, illustrations, continuous print, paragraphing, and dialogue.
This can be used as a resource for students and is convenient for guided reading groups. After the students understand text features it is their turn to show their knowledge. Students will then search for the different text features, write a description, and tell the book and page number where it was found or apply their knowledge by writing examples of the text feature. This activity is very engaging and differentiates since the texts can be different.
