Do you have a student who is struggling with sounding out unfamiliar words? They need phonics skills, and practicing nonsense words is a great way to teach them to recognize familiar sound patterns in unfamiliar words! I created this set of nonsense word cards to help a student of mine who needs more than just CVC sound patterns, and I had a very hard time finding nonsense word sorts that had more than just CVC patterns.
This set contains word sorts for all of the main long vowel patterns ("ai", "ea", "oa", etc), digraphs and blends ("oi", "aw", etc), as well as two-syllable long vowel patterns and multi-syllabic words.
These word cards can be used in a number of ways:
1. Word sorts
2. Speed drills
3. Guess the word - You say the individual sounds of the word, then they tell you the whole word
4. Phoneme segmentation - You say the whole word, then they segment it into individual phonemes
5. Memory Games
Use this with your struggling readers and watch them grow!
