This bundle of phonics games can be used in centers and small groups to engage students with nonsense words and letters.
The nine thematic literacy games in this bundle engage students with letters and nonsense words. What student doesn’t love a game, especially a thematic one?
While playing these games, students are asked to read VC and CVC nonsense words. Alternatively, students can play with letter cards and give the letter’s name or sound.
Included are games for back-to-school, Halloween, Christmas, and much more!
Why work on these skills?
Nonsense Word Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, and Letter Sound Fluency are skills often assessed through DIBELS and similar tests.
Of course, we are not teaching these skills simply because they are being assessed. Nonsense words can help with blending sounds and decoding words. While “real words” can be memorized, reading nonsense words requires decoding skills.
How do you play?
I’ll use the “Oh Snap!” game as an example.
Stack the playing cards or place them in a container. Students select a nonsense word (or letter) card, then read it. This continues until an “Oh Snap!” card is pulled -- then all the cards go back into the box.
How can I use this?
These games are perfect for centers, small groups, interventions, RTI, etc. Also, consider splitting the class into cooperative groups and playing simultaneously.
